Dog Park

Ever notice your puppy or dog sad? Just laying around the house all day bored? If so why? An answer to solve the problem is easier than you think it is. Starting with getting a dog park put into the community to help get our fury little friends off the bed and couch to get some sun. By putting a dog park in Benson it will greatly benefit the whole town, not just the dogs. Some benefits include bringing money back into the community with a little advertisement to get the snowbirds with their pets to stop let them get some air, another advantage is the bonding time the owner can get with their dogs by spending some time with them outside and running around and not to mention good for their health too. Lastly it’s for the dogs, to help them live longer and have happy lives, having a dog park in Benson will greatly help dogs but also help improve the city and also help out the owners.

To answer the question yes I’ve seen my dog bored around my apartment, not being allowed to run around outside because we do not have a closed in area for him to go to. In conclusion people have seen the benefits that it could hold with improving the dogs and the owner’s health with being outside and also bringing them closer together. Another important thing to remember is that it could bring outside guests for small neighboring towns without a dog park into the city which in turn brings more money into the town and also serves as a good home for the snowbirds in the winter. I’ll leave you with this “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole” by Roger Caras.

  1. A dog park is a great idea. According to the 2013 Parks and Recreation Survey for Benson thirty-eight percent of the respondents reported that they participate in dog walking. Currently there are two park master plans - Lions Park, and Apache Park. The plans for Apache Park are to add a gazebo, and little walking trails. Apache Park is located in the historic district, and the plans were created by the Historical Society. .The Lions Park Master Plan does not; at this time, allow, for a dog park. There is a process that needs to be followed in order to make changes to a park master plan. Currently the Lions Park Master Plan is up for review, and changes will follow as time allows. Part of the process is to make changes based on the 2013, Parks and Recreation survey, focus groups/public forums for public comment, up dates to the based on public input and survey results, and Council approval to adopt the new master plan.

There are also a lot of things to be considered when building a dog park: ground surface, size, shade, location, environmental impact, and fencing just to name a few. There are other issues such as funding, and lack of staff for updates to the master plan, maintaining and building the dog park. Overall it is a good idea that would probably be supported by the community.

  2. I have seen dog parks in use around different cities. It looks like a good idea for people and dogs to socialize, but at the same time you would need a dog who is not a fighter. What would you do if your dog got attacked or was the attacker? I took my dogs out recently in the desert and one of the new neighbor dogs came along and started harassing my youngest dog. I was very concerned that it was going to turn into something ugly and so I returned home with my 3 dogs and made the other dog stay out. I was so full of anxiety of what I might do if that pit bull tore into my dog. Thank goodness he did not. Since then he has gotten along with the dogs and goes on walks.
I would like to add however that we have used a dog park in the State Park in Safford and it was great because we could let the dogs run off their leashes. I would support a dog park in Benson, but wouldn't use it.

  3. This is a good idea! I had to give one of my dogs to a relative because he didn't have much of a yard to run around in and I knew he deserved better. If we had a dog park then obviously I'd still have him! You brought up a good idea with the snow birds. You can advertise the dog park at the RV parks and throughout the town. And in turn, the snow birds may stay longer meaning they'd spend more in the town in Benson. To build a dog park wouldn't be very pricey and it would be easy to break even and even more with some of the money it will bring to the town. I liked how you answered your question from your introduction in your conclusion, I did that in my post as well. I think that by doing that it brings the listeners/readers back to the first words you said for a brief moment and refreshes their memory a bit.
